The Food and Drug Administration has tripled the number of deaths it attributes to allergic reactions to the blood thinner heparin since January 2007 to 62 from 19.
FDA (Food and Drug Administration) reported that about 103 patients have died after taking the blood thinning drug heparin instead of 19 that was earlier reported by the FDA.
The FDA has been checking contamination of heparin injections made by Baxter International pharmaceuticals, since it found the product was infected with an unnatural chemical while it was in a plant in China.
The US Food and Drug Administration released an update yesterday, 8th April, showing a dramatic rise in the number of deaths that may be due to patients having allergic reactions to contaminated heparin. The agency puts the new figure at 62 deaths in the last 15 months, which is considerably more than the 19 suggested last month.
